Charlie, a second-year Digital Technology Degree Apprentice at the Ministry of Defence (MoD), has been combining academic study with hands-on industry experience since joining the MoD in September 2023. Now, as he continues to progress in his apprenticeship, Charlie shares the skills and insights he’s gained so far, offering a glimpse into how his journey has shaped his career. After completing his A Levels in Computer Science, Economics, and Maths at Weston College, Charlie progressed to University Centre Weston (UCW) to pursue a degree apprenticeship. In his role within the MoD, he is specialising in software engineering, an area that is giving him a unique and valuable insight into the defence sector. Charlie has recently returned to Weston College, where he shared his experience with A Level learners, providing them with advice on the benefits, structure, application process, and entry requirements of a degree apprenticeship at the MoD.
In this article, Charlie reflects on his journey, the support he’s received, and the most rewarding aspects of his apprenticeship.
What Skills Have You Developed So Far During Your Apprenticeship?
Charlie explains that his apprenticeship has helped him develop essential personal and professional skills. “My apprenticeship has played a pivotal role in developing my organisational, disciplined, and punctual attributes. Balancing work, education, and social life can be challenging, but achieving the right balance has helped me hone these skills. It’s important for me to continue developing these skills to progress my career towards leadership roles.”
What Support Have You Received During Your Apprenticeship?
Support has been an important aspect of Charlie’s apprenticeship. “Many people around the organisation have been apprentices themselves before moving into full-time roles, so they are incredibly supportive and helpful,” Charlie shares. “I want to give a special mention to the team of scheme managers in entry talent. They are always there to provide support and assistance, playing a crucial role throughout the entire apprenticeship journey.”
What Part of Your Apprenticeship Do You Enjoy the Most?
Charlie enjoys the wide variety of experiences available through his apprenticeship. “What I find most enjoyable is the chance to work in various areas within the defence sector. We not only work within the MoD, but also have opportunities to collaborate with industry partners and other government departments. This allows us to gain and enhance skills and experiences that aren’t readily available internally.”
Would You Recommend Others to Do an Apprenticeship?
When asked whether he would recommend others consider a degree apprenticeship, Charlie is enthusiastic. “A degree apprenticeship is absolutely worthwhile. It’s the best of both university and work,” he explains. “Earning a competitive full-time salary while gaining years of work experience and a degree puts you in a very positive position for your career, likely ahead of many others your age.”
Charlie’s story is a fantastic example of how degree apprenticeships can offer both academic learning and real-world experience, providing apprentices with a head start in their careers. His journey highlights the power of combining education with industry exposure to build a successful future.
