We’re celebrating Jack, a talented Computing and Digital Lecturer at University Centre Weston (UCW) who teaches at the West of England Institute of Technology (WEIoT). Jack’s journey is truly inspiring—he studied a BSc in Applied Computing at WEIoT before returning as a lecturer and becoming the HE Computing Programme Coordinator at UCW.
“Studying and working at the WEIoT gives me a unique understanding of the student experience and an opportunity to contribute to the institution’s growth while mentoring the next generation.”
A Champion in Computing & Digital Skills
While studying at WEIoT, Jack took part in WorldSkills UK, a prestigious competition showcasing top talents in higher and further education. Jack’s hard work and dedication led him to win gold at the WorldSkills UK National Finals in Web Design & Development.
“Winning this competition gave me a deeper understanding of industry standards and best practices. I now share insights into high-level competition and skill application, having spent three years with WorldSkills UK Web Design as a mentor and judge.”
Jack’s success didn’t stop there—he was also nominated for AoC Student of the Year and won:
HE Student of the Year
Computing and Engineering Student of the Year at the 2022 UCW Awards
State-of-the-Art Facilities at WEIoT
Jack has witnessed firsthand how investment in WEIoT has benefited students.
“The investment brought in excellent resources like networking hardware, 3D printers, CNC machines, and Raspberry Pis, which significantly improved practical learning.”
He highlighted how 3D printers and networking lab equipment were essential for his projects, and how access to Free Enterprise Web Hosting allowed him to develop real-world web projects.
Inspiring the Next Generation
Now a lecturer at WEIoT, Jack finds his role rewarding and fulfilling, particularly because he gets to mentor talented and passionate students. His key goal is to help students reach their full potential.
