The Power of Apprenticeships: Insights from the WEIoT Team

20 February 2025

Apprenticeships are a great way to gain hands-on experience, develop real-world skills, and kickstart a career. Members of the WEIoT team, including current and former apprentices and apprenticeship specialists, share their experiences and insights into why apprenticeships are so valuable.

Claire: How Apprenticeships Benefit Employers and Teams

“Apprenticeships offer employers the opportunity to grow their own talent and develop the workforce they need for the future. Each apprenticeship is mapped to an occupational standard, ensuring apprentices get the skills industry confirms are needed, and the cost of the training is covered for the most part by the levy.

“Apprenticeships can support employees of all ages, whether it’s a school leaver in their first role or an older worker progressing from the shop floor to management. Investing in staff development helps build a sense of worth and loyalty within the wider team.”

Donna: Helping People Find the Right Apprenticeship

“During my time as a Specialist Apprenticeship Careers Advisor and Future Talent Lead, it was vitally important to me that the young people I engaged with were making informed decisions about their next steps. There is nothing more rewarding than working with someone who is a bit lost and then seeing them identify their value and use that to secure a meaningful next step and flourish.

“That ‘light bulb’ moment, when a young person recognises that they can achieve, is why I do what I do. It has been equally rewarding to watch them progress and excel in their careers—some using the skills learned from their apprenticeship to move into different industries, but all using it as a platform to step into the world of work, gain new skills, and, in some cases, go on to support others on their apprenticeship journey.”

Georgia: How an Apprenticeship Shaped My Career

“My apprenticeship enabled me to progress into the role I’m in today through the skills and confidence it gave me. I built relationships with key internal and external stakeholders, which strengthened my confidence when it came to applying for positions after completing my apprenticeship.

“I finished my apprenticeship with valuable knowledge and behaviours that I can transfer into any future career, and I’m grateful for the opportunity I had to gain these skills.”

Zac: The Power of Learning on the Job

“One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned as an apprentice is how important adaptability is in a fast-paced work environment. In marketing, no two days are the same—one day I’m creating social media content, and the next I’m helping with events or writing press stories.

“Being hands-on has helped me develop problem-solving skills and the confidence to take on new challenges without hesitation.”

Why Apprenticeships Help Develop Lifelong Skills

Claire: “Apprenticeships have been around for hundreds of years as a way to develop the knowledge, skills, and behaviours needed for certain job roles. The current version of apprenticeships maps learning and knowledge to workplace skills, ensuring people are competent in their roles.

“There are different levels depending on job roles and responsibilities. You can complete one apprenticeship and, if you gain a new role, start another to continue developing your skills.”

Donna: “Apprenticeships hold the key to unlocking talent. With tailored training led by employers, they bring education and industry together to ensure skills and knowledge are fit for purpose.

“Beyond technical skills, just being in a professional work environment teaches you so much—teamwork, problem-solving, effective communication—the list goes on. These create a solid foundation for lifelong skills.”

Georgia: “Apprenticeships help you develop professional qualities that you can use in the workplace while still receiving the support you need. These qualities also help in your personal life, shaping you into the best version of yourself both professionally and generally.

“Whether you continue in the same career or decide to take a different path, the skills you gain through an apprenticeship are invaluable.”

Zac: “Apprenticeships give you real-world experience that you just can’t get from a classroom alone. You’re constantly applying what you learn in a practical setting, which helps develop skills like communication, teamwork, and time management. These skills aren’t just useful for the job you’re training for—they will benefit you throughout your entire career.”

Advice for Anyone Considering an Apprenticeship

Claire: “Do it. Research the job you want and apply to vacancies and local employers. Vacancies open and close all the time, so don’t think you’ve missed an opportunity. Keep going—it’s worth it in the end.

“Both my children started as Business Admin apprentices and have grown into different careers in their respective sectors—one as a Business Analyst and one as a Project Support Officer in well-paid roles.”

Donna: “Do your research. Register on the apprenticeship website (Find an Apprenticeship – GOV.UK), and if you have an industry in mind, look directly at employer websites.

“Be bold and approach companies directly—it’s a competitive market, and you need to stand out! Think about your existing skills, whether they come from part-time or voluntary work or extracurricular activities like sports. Employers value these transferable skills.

“It’s never too early to start looking. Even if you don’t finish your current study programme until next year, researching apprenticeships and companies now will help when it’s time to apply. And don’t be afraid to ask for help—if you’re in school, sixth form, or college, there will be someone who can guide you. Reach out and ask.”

Georgia: “My advice to anyone considering an apprenticeship is to take the jump and go for it. Completing an apprenticeship gives you many transferable skills and opens numerous opportunities to build your career.”

Zac: “Go for it! It’s one of the best ways to gain industry experience while learning at the same time. Be open to feedback, ask questions, and take every opportunity to develop your skills. You’ll be surprised at how much you grow, both professionally and personally, in such a short time.”

Apprenticeships provide a unique opportunity to gain experience, develop essential skills, and earn while you learn. Whether you’re just starting your career or looking to upskill, they offer the perfect balance of education and hands-on learning to set you up for success.
